With Cesare Picco: exploring the Milanese music landscape
20/11/2024We asked Cesare Picco, pianist and composer with whom we collaborated for the Bösendorfer Lounge on June, 2022—a series of invite-only concerts in our courtyard—to share the best places and moments to experience music in Milan. The city is a vibrant and dynamic stage, and who better than him to guide us on a journey through classical and contemporary sounds?
What are the must-visit places in Milan to discover, or rediscover, the best of the city’s music scene?
Milan has an extraordinary ability to cater to music lovers of all genres. Today, I’d like to highlight two very different places, both united by their commitment to quality.
It’s impossible to talk about music in Milan without mentioning Teatro alla Scala, a globally renowned institution. It’s not just about prestige but also excellence in its programming. Even those who aren’t classical music enthusiasts should visit at least once, perhaps taking advantage of the side events often held in the Foyer, making the Teatro an essential landmark for music lovers.

On the other end of the musical spectrum, there’s DETUNE, a new venue Milan had been waiting for. This club embodies the more underground side of the city’s music scene, bringing Milan closer to other European capitals like Berlin or London.
It’s the perfect place to explore the most innovative and contemporary movements of the new generations.

These days, the city is alive with the Music Week: for seven days a year, Milan transforms into a grand stage hosting hundreds of artists. We know you’ll be a part of it too. Can you tell us more?
I’m thrilled to participate in this event, as it allows me to showcase another iconic place for music and culture in Milan: Casa degli Artisti. Located in the Brera district, it’s a space offering a rich mix of ateliers and cultural initiatives.
In the past, I had the honor of curating an artist residency here, and I’m delighted to return for a special performance alongside Taketo Gohara, a music designer and trusted colleague for over 20 years. We’ll present Haiku, a dialogue between piano and electronics based on improvisation.

Aside from Music Week, do you have any other events to recommend?
Absolutely. I’d like to highlight Isole Sonore, a festival organized by Bocconi University in collaboration with Yamaha. This event combines jazz, classical music, and performances by international artists, who perform for free every week in the university’s auditorium (by reservation).
It’s a perfect blend of culture and music, and it’s attracting an ever-growing audience.
